Taiwu Gallery

Six-Day Immersive Lacquer Art Workshop at Taiwu Gallery

Taiwu Gallery, located at 254 South Bridge Road in Singapore’s historic Chinatown, proudly presents the first structured lacquer craft workshop in Singapore, focusing on the ancient and living heritage of Chinese lacquer. With origins traced to Neolithic China and at least 6,000 years of development, this material is foundational to East-Asian craft traditions.

Why lacquer?

Natural lacquer—urushi—is the sap from the lacquer tree (Toxicodendron vernicifluum). Through layering, curing and polishing, it becomes a waterproof, corrosion-resistant and luminous surface. This workshop guides you through three immersive modules:

- Kintsugi Repair – Use lacquer to repair ceramic fractures, then highlight them with gold powder, turning flaw into beauty.
- Lacquer Jewelry Making – Combine wood, shell, fabric and layered lacquer to produce wearable art.
- Lacquer Bowl Making – Construct, coat, sand and finish your own lacquer bowl, designed for everyday use and display.
