A Quiet Space Above Chinatown
Inside Taiwu Gallery on South Bridge Road: porcelain, lacquer and tea objects brought together in a quiet space for looking closely.

Taiwu Gallery sits at 254 South Bridge Road, #02-01, in Singapore’s Chinatown. A move upstairs brings visitors into a space devoted to Dehua white porcelain, contemporary lacquer and objects associated with tea. The change of setting offers a simple invitation: take a little more time to look.
The gallery’s opening was recorded in October 2025. The photographs accompanying that account show the interior, its displays and the relationship between individual objects and the room around them. Revisited today as an archive, they describe the beginnings of a physical setting for a practice that had already taken shape online.
Objects and the space around them
A room changes the way an object is encountered. In the archive photographs, a round central display gives smaller pieces a shared setting. Cabinets hold groups of ceramics, while a small table provides a more intimate view. Moving between these arrangements changes the scale of attention.

White porcelain benefits from this movement between the whole and the detail. From farther away, a silhouette may be the first thing to register. Closer in, a rim, a glazed surface or a small decoration begins to ask for attention. The surroundings give those observations time to develop.
Porcelain, lacquer and everyday ritual
Taiwu brings several material traditions into the same conversation. Porcelain contributes its forms and pale surfaces. Lacquer introduces another range of colour, texture and construction. Teaware brings the question of use into the gallery: how an object might become part of a daily rhythm.

The Experience page describes the gallery’s interest in craft, time and care. Those themes are a useful guide when visiting. They encourage attention to how an object has been formed and how it might be lived with, while leaving room for each visitor’s own response.
Planning a visit
The photographs are historical views rather than a promise that every pictured object is currently on display or available. For a particular work or a planned visit, use the Visit page to find the address, map and current contact information.
A gallery can offer a pause without asking for a special occasion. A closer look at one vessel, a conversation about a material, or a few minutes spent with an unfamiliar craft can be enough. Taiwu’s setting above South Bridge Road makes room for those small encounters.
