Dehua, known as the “Porcelain Capital of China,” has a ceramic heritage spanning over 3,700 years. Located in Fujian, it is home to over 4,000 ceramic enterprises and the world’s only “World Ceramic Capital” title by the World Crafts Council. Renowned for its pure “Blanc de Chine,” Dehua porcelain is celebrated for its jade-like whiteness and exquisite artistry. As a major hub for ceramic innovation, production, and export, Dehua’s works have been featured at national events such as the BRICS Summit and the Olympics, symbolizing China’s timeless craftsmanship and global cultural influence.

Blanc de Chine, meaning “White from China,” refers to Dehua’s pure white porcelain from Fujian Province. Celebrated for its creamy translucence and serene form, it originated in the Ming dynasty and gained fame through European trade. Crafted from fine kaolin clay, Blanc de Chine embodies Buddhist tranquility and Confucian balance. It influenced European porcelain makers like Meissen and Sèvres. Today, Dehua artisans continue to innovate within this tradition, merging ancient craftsmanship with modern design. Blanc de Chine remains a symbol of timeless elegance, connecting art, culture, and tea through the enduring beauty of handmade porcelain.

Yan Songliu, founder of Ciyan Workshop and a Provincial Arts and Crafts Master from Dehua, fuses traditional porcelain craftsmanship with modern sculptural ideas. Trained under renowned masters and educated in both classical and Western art, Yan’s work embodies harmony, rhythm, and emotional depth. His sculptures reinterpret Chinese cultural symbols through a contemporary lens — from Confucian ideals to poetic scenes of nature. Pieces like Rites and Music and Shadow of Bamboo Flute showcase a refined balance between tradition and innovation, establishing Yan as one of Dehua’s most influential modern ceramic artists.

Taiwu Gallery presents Singapore’s first immersive lacquer art workshop, celebrating China’s 6,000-year-old urushi tradition. Over six days, participants will learn kintsugi repair, lacquer jewelry, and bowl making—combining heritage techniques with modern aesthetics. Guided by artist Kevin Yuan, this hands-on program emphasizes patience, craftsmanship, and mindfulness, offering a rare opportunity to experience the art of natural lacquer. Limited to six participants, the workshop will be held at Taiwu Gallery, 254 South Bridge Road.
